Don’t mess with Magic the Gathering.
Alyssa Bereznak, a writer for Gizmodo, went on an OkCupid date and after finding out the guy was a Magic the Gathering champion named Jon Finkel (the dude’s likeness is featured in a card!), she wrote a story mocking him and warning others to “Google the shit out of your next online date.”
Despite writing for a tech site, Alyssa seemed to have forgotten that the internet is chock full of level-26 nerd wizards who don’t take kindly to the desecration of their idols. The post comments showed enough of a backlash, but then Finkel started answering questions about the experience on a Reddit thread: “Hi people, I’m Jon Finkel. I went out uneventfully with a girl a couple weeks ago and we never spoke again. Then she posts about how she cant believe I didn’t warn her I was an ex magic world champion, and the internet had issues with that. Somehow, I’m the top IAMA request on reddit, so here I am. Ask me Anything.”
